Greetings, Darklings! Today, I thought I'd feature six films that I'm eternally ranting and raving about. Each comedic treat is packed with memorable quotes and a bucket of laughter... or two, or maybe even three...
There's nothing I love more than cosying up in bed with a blanket and a wee cup of tea, especially around this time of the year when the temperature is decreasing and people are more prone to catch the cold. Okay, so we're a little too used to the Scottish weather but it's an acceptable excuse... right? Like many other movie enthusiasts, I watch far too many films in the space of a week so trying to cut this list down to five wasn't for happening. Sigh. But I managed to do it, eventually. Without further ado, I'm going to share with you some of my favourite comedy films of all-time because if you haven't seen them then you need to add them to your "watch list".
KNOCKED UP (2007):
Director: Judd Apatow Genre(s): Romance, Comedy, Drama Time Duration: 129 minutes UK Age Rating: 15 Watch the trailer here |
Seth Rogen is one of my favourite actors of all-time. I adore him more than words can describe thus you'll probably notice a reoccurring pattern happening throughout this list. Knocked Up is unlike any other "romantic" film I've seen and that's what I love about it. It's refreshing and has just the right amount of comedic humour. Ben Stone (Seth Rogen) is in his early 20s, lives off funds he received as compensation for an injury and shares a house with his fellow stoner companions; Jay, Jonah, Jason and Martin whom run a rather... exotic website. Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl) on the other hand is very work-striven, she's a TV production assistant whom is aspiring to be the presenter of E! - a channel dedicated to interviewing celebrities. When she gets the promotion, she celebrates at a nightclub where she meets Ben and they end up having a one night stand. The pair couldn't be more unlike if they tried. When things don't quite work out, Ben goes on a road trip to Las Vegas with Alison's sister Debbie's husband Pete (Paul Rudd... *heart eye emoji*) where everything is put into perspective and the boys are determined to get their lives back together. The soundtrack features Bright Eyes, The All-American Rejects, The Clash and a few other hidden treasures!
PAUL (2011):
Director: Greg Mottola Genre(s): Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi Running Time: 104 and 110 minutes UK Age Rating: 15 Watch the trailer here |
If you haven't seen this film then you're missing out - especially if you're a comic book enthusiast. So, take Simon Pegg (Graeme), Nick Frost (Clive) and Seth Rogen (the voice-over for Paul), make a goofy Sci-Fi film with two British comic-book geeks and what do you get? Another winner, that's what! Basically, Graeme and Clive travel across the world to attend a Comic-Con convention in the US. They've heard rumours about there being UFO sightings but never imagined that on the trip they'd come face-to-face with an alien - especially not in a rented Winnebago. They soon learn that Paul has escaped from a top-secret military base and take it in their power to help him return to his people - the trip evolves into a full-blown bumpy ride and takes on an anti-Christian vibe in a light-hearted manner. If that was ever possible! There's a lot of controversy in regards to Simon and Nick not living up to the expectations of their debut in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz but I'm not going to delve too much into that since PAUL isn't supposed to be taken in a serious manner. It's definitely one to add to your viewing list thus you can make your own judgements and decide for yourself!
I LOVE YOU, MAN (2009):
Director: John Hamburg Genre(s): Romance, Comedy, Buddy Running Time: 105 minutes UK Age Rating: 15 Watch the trailer here |
I Love You, Man is a film that I can quote word for word since I've watched it more times than I can count. Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) and Sydney Fife (Jason Segel) are a match made in heaven. Peter Klaven is a real state agent whom gets engaged to his girlfriend Zoeey Rice (Rashida Jones). The fact that he doesn't have any male friends becomes a concern. He needs a best man for the wedding. Peter turns to his younger brother Robbie (Andy Samberg) whom is gay for advice on how to talk to men. His brother introduces him to a few men whom get the wrong end of the stick thus he is ready to give up hope. He meets Sydney during an open house at Lou Ferrigno's mansion where Sydney is only there to find divorced women and is taking advantage of all the free food. What a classic! The pair hit it off and go on a few man dates where they bond over their love for the progressive rock band Rush! Ayyy! They hang out at Sydney's crib where they "slap the bass" and spend some manly time together. Their relationship soon takes a turn for the worst after a few mishaps but they're reunited in style thanks to his wife-to-be Zoeey. This is one for my hard rockin' amigos and those whom are looking for a great pick-me-up.
THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN (2005):
Director: Judd Apatow Genre(s): Romance, Comedy, Buddy Running Time: 116 and 133 minutes UK Age Rating: 15 Watch the trailer here |
"Better late than never", we have The 40-Year-Old-Virgin, Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell). He lives alone, plays video games, collects action figures and has no social life even at the electronics shop where he works, SmartTech. His co-workers David (Paul Rudd), Cal (Seth Rogen) and Jay (Romany Malco) view him as being the last resort when their friend drops out of a poker game. To them, he's a social outcast. When they awkwardly spark up a conversation, they soon discover that he is a virgin. David, Cal and Jay take on the responsibility of helping Andy break out of his old ways but they only seem to be able to give him contradicting advice. Surprisingly, Cal's advice works and Andy is able to form a new opinion on women as he goes on a variety of dates which unleashes a surprise of its own. Andy takes matters into his own hands and meets Trish Piedmont (Catherine Keener), they go on a series of dates - twenty, to be exact. An argument breaks out between the pair leading up to an unusual yet somewhat pleasant ending consisting of the characters dancing to the song "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" in a musical scene. It's understandable if you're familiar with a peculiar scene!
STEP BROTHERS (2008):
Director: Adam McKay Genre(s): Slapstick Comedy, Buddy Running Time: 98 and 106 minutes UK Age Rating: 15 Watch the trailer here |
Now we have the holy grail of slapstick films - for me, at least. The last time I heard that I laughed so hard I fell off my dinosaur! Step Brothers is a film that just about everyone and their granny can quote word for word so I don't think it needs a brief introduction. If you haven't seen it yet, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING? For those whom haven't, twenty-nine-year-old Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell) is unemployed, knows no boundaries and still lives with his mother. On the other hand, we have fourty-year-old Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) lives with his father and is in the same position. The two 'men' have no intentions of moving out or finding jobs so when Brennan's mother Nancy (Mary Steenburgen) and Dale's father Robert (Richard Jenkins) are planning to marry, the boys come into contact and are forced to live with each other or else they'll need to move out. Due to their childish behaviour, their parents make it clear that if they haven't found a job in the space of a month, they'll be forced to leave the house. As time goes by, the two boys let their guards down and become friends after realising they have a lot in common. When things become too tough for Robert to handle, he announces that him and Nancy are getting a divorce thus Brennan and Dale blame each other and we're back to square one. The ending turns out differently than what is anticipated. You'll laugh as much as I did!
SUPERBAD (2007):
Director: Greg Mottola Genre(s): Comedy Running Time: 119 minutes UK Age Rating: 15 Watch the trailer here |
Last but not least, we have Superbad... what a surprise! My list would not be complete without this wee number. Greg Mottola definitely knows what he's doing, that's for sure. It was proclaimed "...the year's funniest flick" by FHM. I've always loved the idea of Jonah Hill and Michael Cera starring in a film together since one is very mistakenly outspoken whereas the other is full of endearment. When I found out it was co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, I was eager to see the outcome and boy, was I not disappointed! Fun fact for you all, the main characters are named after the Seth and Evan. Both boys have been best friends since childhood and are currently unpopular seniors in high school. They're ready to embark on the next adventure but want to lose their virginity beforehand. When Seth is invited to a house party at Jules' (Emma Stone) house, he gets the wrong end of the stick and thinks she wants to hook up with him thus leading to a series of unfortunate events for Seth, Evan and Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). They promise more than they can give and Fogell comes into contact with cops but in a... different light. Everything is blown out of proportion, quite literally... *queue the lame pun*, I'm McLovin' it!
So, those were a few of my favourite comedy films. I'd love to know what your opinions are on any of the listed films. Do you like them? Do you dislike them? Were they to your acquired taste or would you have liked to see something different happen? Also, what are your favourite comedic films?
